The Stone’s Story
 
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral treasured since antiquity. Ancient Egyptians carved it into amulets and ground it into eye cosmetics; Greeks and Romans used it for jewelry and inlay. In later centuries it became a decorative favorite from the Ural Mountains of Russia to the Congo, even lining palace interiors like St. Petersburg’s famed Malachite Room. Its vivid bands come from copper-rich layers formed over thousands of years in the oxidized zones of copper deposits—no two patterns are ever the same.
